The epic journey of a musical genius, starring Richard Burton in the title role, in his penultimate film part. Made to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his death in 1883, Wagner is a production of the life of the greatest of contemporary composers. Richard Wagner remains an enigma. His was a rags-to-riches story with a fairy tale end. He was loved yet hated, admired yet despised, a villain yet a hero, a man whose fame and exploits were the gossip of Europe. Above all, he was an incurable romantic whose love affair with Liszt's illegitimate daughter rivals that of Romeo and Juliet in excitement and drama. But he was also a dangerous political revolutionary whose influence penetrated the whole fabric of German society. He was a scoundrel, joker, philosopher, con-man, poet, refugee, a political orator, a legend in his own lifetime and one of the greatest composers who ever lived.

Explosive action sequences and realistic imagery show the disturbing events when the ransom for two British hostages fails to materialise. A BBC drama production based on Tolstoy's epic Napoleonic story and the most expensive they had ever attempted at that time. This sumptuous, award-winning series stars Anthony Hopkins, Alan Dobie, Joanna David, David Swift and Frank Middlemass as well as an amazing cast featuring almost every well-known face on British TV in the 1970s. The story focuses on two aristocratic families affected by the Napoleonic invasion of Russia in 1812 and the rivalries that exist between them. The DVD features all 20 episodes completely remastered and restored.
Filmed by the Ruscico studios, the Communist government run Russian film company that was responsible for most of Russia's output during the Communist years. It was filmed over several years, and was finally completed in 1967. It is widely recognised as being the closest cinematic adaptation of Tolstoy's original masterpiece. The film is known for its scale, complexity, and historical accuracy, being filmed over almost 5 years and featuring a cast of over 100,000. Running over 7 hours, it is one of the last true epics made and, in the days before computer animation, featured impressively complex battle scenes using tens of thousands of extras, all clothed in authentic uniforms - it is unlikely that a film of this scale will ever be seen again. It won both an Academy Award (R) and Golden Globe (R) for Best Foreign Language picture in 1969.
War Archive Collection, The - Bombers And Bombing Raids 1939 - 1942
The German Luftwaffe entered the Second World War with the world's most effective bomber force, built around the Heinkel He-111 and Dornier D0-17 medium bombers, and the new Junkers Ju-88 'Schnellbomber'. From its outset, the new Luftwaffe was planned as a tactical instrument, designed to provide air support to the army in what was assumed would be a short war. In this programme, which covers combat operations from North Africa through to Northern Norway and the Atlantic approaches to the Battle of Stalingrad, the role of the Luftwaffe's bombing in the period of Germany's military expansion between 1939 and 1942 is told employing dramatic and graphic footage.
War Archive Collection, The - Bombers And Bombing Raids 1942 - 1945
With the failure of the German Bomber 'B' programme to find a replacement for the existing medium bombers, and the continuing problems with the Heinkel He-177, the Luftwaffe found itself being forced to keep in production types with which it had entered the war. The heavy losses in Russia and the growing effectiveness of allied air power was having a dire impact on the ability of the German bomber force to carry out its role. In 1943, when the Luftwaffe once more launched night bomber raids against the UK, the effectiveness of the night flyer defence led to very high losses. The decline of the Luftwaffe bombing arm is covered in the operations of the varied aircraft types employed, down to Germany's surrender in May, 1945. Also shown are flying boats and float planes, seen operating from the Mediterranean through to the Arctic Ocean.
War Archive Collection, The - Dive Bombers And Combat Aircraft
For many in the opening years of the Second World War, the vision of the menacing, gull-winged Stuka dive bomber, plunging vertically earthwards, its sirens wailing like banshees before releasing its bomb load, became the very embodiment of the terror created by the new form of 'Blitzkrieg' warfare unleashed on Europe by the German Wehrmacht in September, 1939. Designed to assist ground operations, the Stuka was always to be found operating with the leading elements of the army in France, North Africa, and Russia as 'flying artillery'. In this wide-ranging presentation the Stuka is seen in action on all fronts, as well as the Hs-129s and Fw-190 in action in Russia.
War Archive Collection, The - German Fighter - Aircraft Of WW II 1942-1945
For the day fighters of the Luftwaffe, the dominant reality in the period 1943-1945 was the massive growth in the daylight bombing raids of Germany by the United States. While other theatres did have a call on the fighter wings, by far and away the bulk of German day fighters in this period were employed in the air defence of Germany. The core of the day fighter units continued to be built around later variants of the Bf-109 and the Fw-190, which were being continually modified and upgraded with new armament combinations and employing new tactics to force down the U.S. heavy bombers. The reality of the air-war over Germany is demonstrated in this programme, illustrating the battles fought by the Lufytwaffe day fighter squadrons in their attempts to frustrate ever growing U.S. and allied bomber raids.
War Archive Collection, The - German Jets - V1 And V2 Flying Bombs
The assumption that the RAF's long-range reconnaissance aircraft, the Mosquito, could continue to employ its high speed to range across Germany with impunity, was shattered on 25th July, 1944. A Mosquito, belonging to the No.544 squadron, barely escaped destruction after having been attacked in the first air-to-air encounter with the revolutionary new German fighter, the Messerschmitt Me-262.The Me-262 represented the cutting edge of a new generation of highly advanced combat types, employing jet and rocket propulsion. Paralleling these aircraft types in the spring of 1945 were the first of Hitler's revenge weapons, the V-1 Flying Bomb and the advanced V-2 Rocket, that were intended to turn the tide of the war.
War Archive Collection, The - German Miltary Vehicles
Seemingly present whenever German combat cameramen were filming, armoured cars and half tracks were as vital to the German war machine as the Panzers. Designed for the vital role of reconnaissance, they ranged ahead of the advancing Panzer spearheads to assess enemy strengths and intentions. Whether on four wheels or employing the more distinctive eight wheel configuration, German armoured cars would be seen as much a symbol of the Blitzkrieg as the Panzers themselves. This programme covers all these vehicles and includes rare footage of the late war 'Puma' armoured car in Normandy.
War Archive Collection, The - German Support Aircraft
Although taking the lead from early experiments with paratroops carried out by the Soviet Union, it was the German Luftwaffe who first employed paratroops and glider-borne troops in 1940. From the paradrops in Norway and Holland, and the glider landings on the Belgian forts at Eben Emael, to the climax of German airborne operations with the assault on Crete in May 1941, the Ju-52 was the transport workhorse of the Wehrmacht, the German Armed Forces. 1942 saw the appearance of the Messerschmitt Me-323 'Gigant', a six-engined variant of the Me-321 glider. Covered in this programme are glider operations in Italy, and even the employment of DFS 230s to re-supply garrisons on the Oder front in 1945. Also shown are reconnaissance, trainer and liaison aircraft, which made a vital contribution to the role of the Luftwaffe on all fronts in the Second World War.
War Archive Collection, The - Grey Wolves 1939 - 1941
For Kapitaen zur See and Fuehrer der U-boote Karl Doenitz the outbreak of war between Germany and the United Kingdom in September 1939 found the submarine arm of the Kriegsmarine unready for conflict. Nevertheless, Doenitz's 'Grey Wolves' were still able to inflict substantial losses on vessels carrying Britain's lifeblood. The conflict widened after the occupation of France and its ports gave the submarines direct access to the Atlantic shipping lanes, which in turn led later to a larger arena. This programme depicts the course of the U-boat war in its initial phase in vivid images captured primarily by German cameramen with much being presented to the viewer for the first time.
War Archive Collection, The - Grey Wolves 1942 - 1943
The first six months of 1942 saw the war assume a truly global dimension with the entry of the United States into the conflict. For the U-boat arm, the heavy coastal traffic off the eastern seaboard of the U.S. provided such a fertile hunting ground that the high number of vessels sank led this period to be christened by the submarine crews as the 'second happy time'. The belated introduction of convoy tactics by the US Navy saw U-boat victories off the U.S. coast sink to a low of just three in July 1942. Fuehrer der U-boote Doenitz now set out to exploit the gap in the mid-Atlantic where convoys were beyond the range and protection of allied aircraft. By 1943 the Wolf Packs were inflicting heavy losses on the convoys - the high point of the U-boat campaign in World War II. New footage helps us understand the on-going battle between hunter and hunted above and beneath the cold, grey waters of the North Atlantic - the most decisive theatre of World War II.
War Archive Collection, The - Grey Wolves 1943 - 1945
With the defeat at Stalingrad, the belated need for total mobilization was accepted by Hitler and the slack in German productive capacity was taken up in an attempt to produce the equipment needed to service a wider and much longer war. A new programme for increased production was introduced - 27 Type VII boats a month by the end of 1943. However, it was already too late for the U-boat arm, for the allies had moved to close the gap. Large numbers of long-range aircraft, new radar, new weapons and new tactics served only to raise U-boat losses in the Atlantic after mid 1943. This final chapter of the 'Grey Wolves' war is told with fascinating footage covering all aspects of this story. It ends with film of the one man 'Biber' submarine, and the arrest of Doenitz in 1945 - Hitler's nominated successor and Germany's last Fuehrer!
War Archive Collection, The - Guns Of The Wehrmacht 1933 - 1945
The effectiveness of its artillery arm was one of the dominating features of the German Army on the battlefields of the Western Front in the First World War. Indeed, a specific requirement of the Treaty of Versailles was that the new Reichswehr be denied heavy artillery. The expertise and technology that had made the artillery arm so effective in that conflict were never lost. So that when re-armament began in Germany 1933, following the Nazi accession to power, the ground was already laid for the rapid expansion of artillery of all types for the new Wehrmacht. While never acquiring the glamour of the Panzer arm, the guns of the Wehrmacht were nevertheless instrumental in serving the German Armed Forces in victory and defeat through to 1945.
War Archive Collection, The - Hummel - Mobile Heavy Artillery
From 1940 until war's end, German industry produced a plethora of self-propelled weapons for the German Army. Whilst some of these were purposely designed, others were extemporary affairs developed rapidly using available weapons and chassis to serve the immediate need of the German Army in the field. Those covered in this programme fall mainly into the categories of tank destroyers and self-propelled artillery. This unique compilation of combat footage of these vehicles will allow the viewer to gain an insight into the variety and importance of such weapons to the German Army, up to its defeat.
War Archive Collection, The - Panther The Panzer V
The Panther was Germany's response to the shocking experience of encountering the superior Soviet T-34 tank in the wake of the invasion of Russia in 1941. While drawing heavily on the design of the T-34, the Panther was however a more sophisticated machine incorporating features that led many to judge it to have been possibly the best designed tank of the war. This programme covers not only evolution of the Panther design but through the usage of combat footage illustrates the Panther in action on all fronts on which the German Army fought from 1943 until 1945.
War Archive Collection, The - Panzer - Germany's War Machine
During WW2, the need for capable and qualified crewmen to work with and maintain the equipment became vital. In order to keep up with the demands of warfare, soldiers and engineers were educated partly with training films. This programme shows footage of the Tiger tanks during Operation Citadel, as well as edited highlights of two German Army training films from late 1943 and mid 1944. Including two major military productions, the first of these films was produced to show how to convert the Panther tank, allowing it to successfully deal with the extensive Soviet defences like those it encountered at its debut in Kursk. The second film from 1944, made for the benefit of personnel serving in Sdkfz 251 D's and the Panzerjaeger IV, may well be the only footage of this type to survive the war. Finally there are sequences showing such machines as the late Model Brummbaer which round off this fascinating assemblage of unique footage of German armoured fighting vehicles from the latter part of WW2.
War Archive Collection, The - Panzer I And II - Light Tanks
It is one of the enduring myths of the Second World War, that the German 'Blitzkrieg' victories of the early years of the conflict were achieved by their employment of a numerically and technologically superior tank force. In reality, the defeat of Poland and France, Yugoslavia and Greece and the remarkable victories in the opening stages of the Russian campaign and in North Africa, were wrought by German tank divisions equipped, in the main, with light tanks. The Panzer I weighed less than six tons, and was armed with two machine guns and armour barely able to withstand the impact of such weapons itself. It was with these light-weight workhorses, rather than their heavier and more glamourous stable mates, that the Blitzkrieg legend was forged.
War Archive Collection, The - Panzer III - Medium Tank
The Panzer III emerged as one of the formative images of German military success in the newsreels produced by the Propaganda Ministry, documenting the Blitzkrieg victories of the early war years. While proving adequate to the task of countering allied armour in France and the Western desert, the fateful encounter with the superior Soviet T-34 tank, following the invasion of Russia in 1941, revealed the technical shortcomings of the Panzer III. Its days as a battle tank were numbered, but it could still be seen serving in the East as a command tank until 1944, and in other secondary theatres such as Norway until the German surrender.
War Archive Collection, The - Panzer IV - Heavy Tank
In continuous production from 1936 until 1945, the Panzer IV was the armoured 'workhorse' of the German Army in the Second World War. Designed originally as a heavy 'support' tank for its stable mate, the lighter Mark III in the Panzer divisions, it became one of the key instruments of the Blitzkrieg victories, in the early war years. This programme traces the long history of this most versatile of German tanks, and documents a combat career that finally ended with the destruction of the last Mark IV's in Syrian service by the Israeli Army on the Golan Heights in 1967.
War Archive Collection, The - Stug III And IV - Assault Guns
One of the most common images of German Armour in the combat footage taken by Goebbel's propaganda cameramen in the second half of the war in Europe, was the Assault Gun or 'Sturmgeschutz' (abbr. Stug). From 1942 onwards it was increasingly employed as a tank destroyer, but its origin lay not in that role but in a 1936 order for an armoured infantry support vehicle. The frequency with which assault guns are filmed in action from 1944 onwards, illustrates the manner to which this vehicle was employed as a substitute for the Panzers. By the war's end assault gun units claimed the destruction of no less than 20,000 allied tanks.
War Archive Collection, The - The Green Devils 1931 - 1941
The Green Devils were the 'fallschirmjaeger' (paratrooper) arm of the Luftwaffe and were to see extensive service in both air-dropped and ground roles, through to the war's end in 1945. However, by 1942, fated by Hitler's judgement that the days of large paratrooper operations had already passed, the Green Devils were to see out the rest of the war serving primarily as elite ground troops. This programme shows their operations in North Africa through to East Prussia and the borders of Germany in 1944-45, as well as in the theatres of Italy and Normandy. It also includes operations by paratroopers in the East where they are seen taking on Soviet T-34s using `Panzerschreck' anti-tank weapons and on the borders of Germany in the opening months of 1945.

War Archive Collection, The - Tiger Heavy Tank Panzer VI
There can be few people who have never heard of the Tiger Tank - indeed, it has come to be seen as one of the most potent symbols of German military power in the Second World War. First committed to combat on the Eastern front 1942, the Tiger and its more formidable successor - the Tiger II, 'Kingtiger' - had, by the time of the defeat of Nazi Germany, generated an awesome reputation that far belied the very small production run of fewer than the 2000 built. The history of this legendary tank is told with particular emphasis placed on combat footage of the Tiger in action, as well as footage of the Ferdinand/Elefant on the Eastern front and the Sturmtiger in action in the Warsaw Uprising of 1944.

War File, The - Battlefield - Battle For The Crimea
Hitler's obsession with the Crimea was the source of fierce disagreements with his General staff, who, according to the Fuhrer, 'knew nothing about the economics of war'. So it was that the German 11th Army under Manstein broke through the Soviet lines in October 1941 - but this was only the beginning of a series of bloody battles that cost the Russians two whole armies. For his bombardment and capture of Sevastapol, Manstein was promoted to Field Marshal. However, the tide turned after the disastrous German defeats at Stalingrad and Kursk. Cut off and isolated in the Crimea, the Germans faced massive Russian attacks and Sevastapol surrendered - against Hitler's orders - in May 1944. Twelve German and Rumanian divisions were completely destroyed and 25,000 prisoners were taken.
War File, The - Battlefield - Campaign In The Balkans
Although the crucial Russian campaign in the Balkans states is perhaps one of the war's lesser known stories, it is a saga packed with drama. In August 1943 the Romanians - no doubt prompted by merciless Allied bombing - overthrew their leader Antonescu and changed sides. Thereafter, events moved swiftly - the Russians soon captured the vital Ploesti oilfields, a huge loss to the German war effort, and within days the Soviets had taken Bucharest itself. A nervous Bulgaria sued for peace with the Allies, but the Russians pushed on into Sofia. Despite the German delaying tactics, Hungary fell next, although there were reinforcements from Axis troops stationed in Greece and Yugoslavia. In Yugoslavia itself the Germans held on grimly to Belgrade until October. The bloody fighting over, the Balkans were carved up and left to Soviet control in the immediate post war era, and the area remains a volatile political and ethnic mix to this very day.
War File, The - Battlefield - Destination Okinawa
The battle for Okinawa claimed more lives than any US campaign against Japan in the Pacific war. Situated between the Ryukyu group of islands north of Formosa and the Japanese home islands, it was chosen as the final springboard for the invasion of Japan itself that was for so long felt vital to bring the war to an end. The Japanese, under Lieutenant General Ushijima, fought for every inch of ground and had constructed a formidable series of defensive lines against the US invasion force. The fighting on the island itself was some of the most savage of the war, while at sea a 700-plane Kamikaze raid sank several US destroyers. The Japanese could not resist the US invasion assault force forever though, and despite seeing their commander General Buckner killed in action, had won victory by June 1945. US casualties were estimated to be 49,000. More than 110,000 Japanese were killed and 7,000 taken prisoner. Within weeks, the atomic bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki had done their work, bringing the war to a sudden end.

It was a hollow victory, since for much of the war the Russians took a drubbing from the determined and resourceful Finns, who organised the defence of their country brilliantly. It is believed that one million Russians lost their lives during the fighting and the weaknesses of the Red Army were exposed for the world to see. Hitler was suitably encouraged, for he had already determined on the invasion and conquest of his erstwhile allied partner. Meanwhile, during the early months of the war, Hitler became increasingly aware of the potential threat of Norway and mounted the world's first airborne invasion there in February 1940. At the same time, German Forces invaded Denmark. Over the next few years, the horrors and intrigues of the Quisling government in Norway unfolded amidst determined Norwegian resistance.
War File, The - Battlefield - War Against The U-Boats
The convoys that sailed time and again across the Atlantic and Arctic oceans to bring vital supplies back to Britain faced one of the greatest and most deadly threats of the entire war. Hidden deep beneath the waves were the German U-boats, which wreaked havoc among the Royal and Merchant navies. This desperate struggle - sometimes known as the 'real battle of Britain - was vital to the outcome of the war. If the U-boat menace had not been met and defeated, Britain could very easily have been starved into submission. The war against the U-boats cost 100,000 lives. Nearly 200 Allied warships and 2500 Merchant ships were sunk during the fighting in this most terrible theatre of battle.
War File, The - Battleships Of World War Two
Three separate documentaries in a boxed set. Battleships At War - The battleship reigned supreme in naval warfare from the start of this century to 1945 - and though only the Dardanelles and Jutland provided action in World War I, German rearmament ensured the heavily-armed queen of the seas would play a major part in the second conflict. The Royal Navy won early successes: the mighty Graf Spee was scuttled off South America, while half of Raeder's fleet was destroyed at Narvik. U-boats and air power posed a real threat to battleship superiority, as proved by British torpedo bombers at Taranto, but Britain had to destroy France's capital ships off North Africa to prevent them falling into enemy hands. Admiral Cunningham's fleet led by HMS Warspite ensured the Royal Navy's mastery of the Mediterranean, crushing Italy at Cape Matapan. Battleships later played a leading role in North Africa, Sicily, Italy and the D-Day landings as floating weapons platforms pounding shore-based enemy positions. The US Navy proved all-powerful in the Pacific, Leyte Gulf leaving the Japanese with only one surviving battleship, fittingly, the final act of the war took place on the USS Missouri as Japan signed the surrender. The Allies had secured ultimate victory - a triumph in which the battleship had played its part. Great German Battleships Of World War Two - Using archive footage, stills and interviews with German ex-Naval officers and seamen, this programme concentrates on the exploits of the famous Bismarck. This is followed by an in-depth portrait of the mightiest and most famous German warships of World War Two, including the big sea battles they encountered. However when Hitler went to war in 1939 only a fraction of the naval vessels that were required were actually ready. At the outbreak of war Germany did not even possess a single aircraft carrier. The battleships Bismark and Tirpitz fought famous battles at sea however the Kriegsmarine was always on the back foot as it came up against superior opponents. This DVD contains rare footage from the German and British archives of the men and ships of the Kriegsmarine and new footage of the last resting place of the Tirpitz.
