Written after Poulenc visited the sacred shrine of the Black Madonna of Rocamadour. He made a pilgrimage to her remote chapel in the south of France after a good friend of his was killed in a car accident. His journey changed his life and his work as a composer. This recording by the combined choirs of St. John's Clare and Gonville and Caius Colleges Cambridge with the BBC Philharmonic is conducted by Christopher Robinson with soprano Judith Howarth.
