Picasso, Pablo - Le Train Bleu/ Le Tricorne - Le Riche -
Between 1917 and 1962, Pablo Picasso was involved in creating the designs for nine ballets including Parade, Pulcinella and L'Apres-midi d'un Faune, in collaboration with such artists as Jean Cocteau, Erik Satie, Igor Stravinsky, Claude Debussy, Leonide Massine and Vaslav Nijinsky. Le Train Bleu dates from 1924 and Le Tricorne from 1919. These two historic ballets, created originally by Sergei Diaghilev, are seen here in productions from the Paris Opera Ballet, filmed in 1993. In Le Train Bleu, Jean Cocteau mockingly celebrates life in the fresh air, fine bodies and sports. Bronislava Nijinska's choreography is therefore inspired by golf, tennis, swimming and acrobatics. Picasso designed the stage curtain for the original production. The cast features the young Nicholas Le Riche as The Handsome Youth. Picasso, a native of Andalusia, created the sets and costumes for the very Spanish ballet, Le Tricorne, (The Three-Cornered Hat). It is a warm and humourous story of a miller's wife, her jealous husband and a senile magistrate by whom she is pursued. An accompanying 15-minute documentary, The Story of a Marriage, traces the story of Picasso's involvement with designs for ballet.
