1969. Two troubled young brothers Mike (Elijah Wood) and Bobby (Joseph Mazzallo) have driven across the United States with their recently divorced mother Mary (Lorraine Bracco) to start a new life in California. After their mother remarries the boys feel isolated and are forced to adjust to some harsh realities. Whilst Mary has to work double shifts as a waitress, the innocent boys struggle to hold their own against their threatening and unpredictable stepfather. The boys dream of escaping these chaotic and troubled times with dreams of flying. Inspired by a local legend, the boys go about transforming their small and ordinary red wagon into a flying machine and transform their own harsh lives into an extraordinary adventure....
