A young woman (Isabelle Adjani)in Paris in the 1920s is left penniless and without means of support. A rather strange middle-aged English couple (Maggie Smith, Alan Bates) offer her refuge but at the price of seduction by the husband. The film is full of intense confrontations brilliantly acted by a wonderful cast. Part of the Merchant/Ivory collection.
