Jean and Pauline meet at a ball when she is twenty but have no idea of the difficulties they will endure in order to stay together. Jean's first calling is to the church where he becomes a clergyman. But as his marriage falls apart, he leaves his wife and child and the disapproving conservative community to be with Pauline. They travel to Switzerland where they begin a new life. Their happiness is spoilt when Jean is asked to return home and take over the family business. Jean feels compelled to accept despite the struggle he knows will lie ahead and the difficulties he and Pauline will experience.
