17th August 1943 was the date of the USAAF's first long distance bomber raid against targets deep inside Germany. Unlike the RAF, USAAF bombers operated in daylight. The objectives were the Messerschmitt factory at Regensburg near the Austrian border and the ball bearing plants at Schweinfurt. Long distance ruled out close fighter escorts and bad weather played havoc with precise timing.
