The film opens in the year 2046. A man named Tak (Takuya Kimura) attempts to persuade wjw1967 (Faye Wong) to travel back in time with him. The film then shifts to the year 1966, in which Chow Mo-Wan (Tony Leung Chiu-wai), a struggling author, asks the woman he loves, Su Li-Zhen (Gong Li) to sail with him from Singapore to Hong Kong on Christmas Eve. She declines, and over the next three years, we return to Chow Mo-Wan on December 24 as he finds himself with another woman each year: lighthearted Lulu (Carina Lau) in 1967, eccentric hotel heiress Wang Jing Wen (Faye Wong) in 1968, and high-class prostitute Bai Ling (Zhang Ziyi) in 1969. In time, Chow Mo-Wan and Wang Jing Wen become re-acquainted, and a love affair blooms, but the fates are not on their side...

Dealing with teenage sexuality, family relations, mental disintegration and death, the films also investigate the processes of perception and attribution of meaning. By mixing and subverting the filmic rules of commercials, cinema verite, pop promos, trailers and documentaries with a lyrical dose of Nordic supernaturalism, the films attain an air of contemporary familiarity combined with intense oddness, giving Ahtila's work its distinctive style. Eija-Loosa Ahtila's films have won numerous film-festival awards and visual art prizes. As part of a retrospective of her installation works in some of the most prominent contemporary art galleries worldwide, the Eija-Loosa Ahtila: real characters, invented worlds exhibition at London's Tate Modern in 2003 exposed Ahtila to a wider British audience.
