Hetty Wainthropp Investigates - Missing Persons

Starring Patricia Routledge as Hetty Wainthropp in the debut episode which introduces the popular sleuth. Missing Persons was a novel written by David Cook who loosely based Hetty Wainthropp on his mother, although he admits his mother wasn't as confident as Hetty - or, indeed, Patricia Routledge. Yorkshire Television commissioned Cook to adapt his novel for a feature-length television pilot and Missing Persons was broadcast in 1990 on ITV, hoping to spawn a series, but the network didn't pick it up. Several years later the BBC decided to give the series the green light and only retained star Patricia Routledge from the initial cast, teaming John Bowen to write with David Cook. They invented Geoffrey, a homeless, streetwise teenager Hetty rescues from a criminal life who becomes her loyal sidekick.
