Innocence

It is a startling debut feature, that explores themes of maturity, understanding, friendship, loss and happiness as young girls prepare for their ascent into womanhood. A subterranean rumbling resonates in the heart of a forest. Hidden by foliage, a metal grate reveals underground passageways, which lead to the cellars of five houses scattered throughout a great park. The park is cut off from the outside world by a huge wall with no door. In one of these houses, a group of girls aged between seven and twelve gathers around a coffin. The coffin lid opens, revealing a six-year-old girl. Her name is Iris. Bianca, the eldest of the group, introduces Iris into this strange but pleasant boarding school, home to some thirty little girls. There are no adults here, save for several old servants and two young teachers: Mademoiselle Edith and Mademoiselle Eva.

1993 was the anniversary of the one hundredth Ladies' Single Championship at Wimbledon. Defending champion Steffi Graf had her sights set on a fifth Wimbledon title and fresh from victory at the French Open, she had progressed through the draw with her usual prowess, not dropping a set en route to the final. Jana Novotna had an equally impressive run, had beaten the number two seed, Martina Navratilova, on Centre Court in the Semi-Final. In sharp contrast to Graf's Twelve Grand Slam titles this was Navotna's first Wimbledon Final. The one hundredth Ladies Final was packed with drama, charged with emotion and tinged with sadness as Navotna, the under dog, played some of the best tennis of her life.
