Deep inside the laboratories at Vivi-Sec UK, scientist Mike Simmons runs the top secret Project S - an experiment to create talking animals. The latest attempt (Batch 4) brings together a group of disparate creatures who live in what they believe is a cosy home but is actually a facade created by the lab computers. They have human personalities and names, wear specially designed clothes, speak in a pseudo-intellectual fashion, eat gourmet food, drink fine wines, read books and magazines and generally live like humans in luxury. Their leader, both by size and brain-power, is a horse named Philip Masterson-Bowie, then there's a dog (Winona Matthews), a monkey (Hugh Gape), a mouse (Clare Franchetti), a bird (Mark Andrews) and a cat (Kieron). The animals chat amiably enough and dream of going to 'London', which the computer depicts to them as a 'special place' where they can use their vocal and intellectual talents. Vivi-Sec UK is run by the sinister Mr Bronson, who is singularly unimpressed by the latest batch in Simmons' experiments and orders the animals to be put down. Kieron the cat is vivisected (his head is removed from his body but his brain is kept alive by a machine) and the others manage to escape their fate by the timely intervention of a hapless squad of animal-rights activists who raid the lab but manage to kill many of the animals while liberating them. When the activists realise that they have intelligent, talking animals on board, the shock causes them to crash their van, and Batch 4 escape to the real world... Features six episodes.

Esa-Pekka Salonen - In Rehearsal - Debussy
Esa-Pekka Salonen in rehearsal. With a highly acclaimed performance of Mahler's 3rd Symphony Finnish conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen acquired worldwide fame at the tender age of 25. Over the following years he not only became the musical head of several festivals, but also guest-conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra London and chief-conductor of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. Salonen's appointment as musical director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1992 is definitely one of the highlights in the career of this amazing musician. Together with the LAP the ambitious Finn realised many great concerts and released some fabulous recordings, mostly with 20th century music repertoire. This program showcases Salonen while rehearsing Claude Debussy's La Mer. There is a special connection between La Mer and the conductor, who is fascinated by the countless sound possibilities of the impressionistic work, and this DVD provides a perfect insight into how he experiments with the score in different performances.
