Filmed entirely on location in and around Warwickshire, Dartmoor and London, the film is a carefully crafted adaptation of the famous nature notes which records in words and illustrations the seasonal changes in the English countryside. Pippa Guard (Hearts and Bones) stars as the author Edith Holden and James Coombes (Howard's Way) is Ernest Smith. When it was originally published in 1977 the book spent a record breaking 64 weeks at number one of the Sunday Times bestseller's list. It has gone on to give rise to a publishing phenomenon which features a range of popular merchandising including stationery, wall coverings, bedding and even fitted kitchens.
