Fred Dibnah - Age Of Steam

Fred Dibnah - Age Of Steam : short review

Fred Dibnah - Age Of Steam

Steam is Fred's passion. He's got his own collection of steam engines and steam driven machinery and he's spent the last twenty years restoring his beloved Aveling and Porter traction engine. In this series he shares his enthusiasm as he uses archive material, visits to original and replica engines and his own models, drawings and practical demonstrations to trace the development of steam power from the earliest experiments to the modern nuclear power plant which relies on the principle of the expansion of steam. During the course of this series Fred will share his passion for steam as he unearths the best of our steam heritage and meets some of his fellow enthusiasts who devote their lives to finding, restoring, preserving and operating steam engines of all sorts of shapes and sizes. Fred Dibnah's Age of Steam tells the story of the invention of the steam engine in the 18th century and of the way in which it was developed throughout the 19th and 20th centuries to drive the wheels of transport and industry. Fred will tell us the story of steam and the part it played in Britain's industrial history and show us the machinery that made that history. He will reveal what the things we see were used for, how they work and what their role was in the extraordinary expansion of industrial Britain in the 18th and 19th centuries. Throughout the series his approach will be very hands-on, travelling on the footplate, stoking the boilers and driving the engines. Includes: Steam Railways, Steam Boats, Steam Rollers, Traction Engines, Showman's Engines, Steam Powered Lorries and Cars, Pumping Engines, Mill Engines, Pithead Winding Engines and Steam Turbines.
