When a young man kills a gang member in defence of an innocent couple, the gang retaliates by attacking his house and murdering his family. Banished by his uncle, he sets out to find a master to teach him the ancient ways of kung fu so that he can avenge his family's deaths. When he returns he is armed with almost super-human ability, and sets out the find the leader of the gang.
A somewhat daffy book editor (Wilder) on a rail trip from Los Angeles to Chicago thinks that he sees a murdered man thrown from the train. When he can find no one who will believe him, he starts doing some investigating of his own, and gets involved in a love affair, a murder, is thrown from the train, wanted by the police, and joins forces with a car thief (Pryor) to reboard the train to save his love. But all that accomplishes is to get the killer after him.
