Set in London in the 19th century, the story is an adaptation of the novel by Sarah Waters. In the dark and twisting alleyways of Dickensian London the stories of two very different women collide with terrifying consequences... Petty thief Sue Trinder is enlisted by conman Richard 'Gentleman' Rivers in an elaborate scam to defraud a wealthy heiress, Maud Lilly, of inheritance. But Sue's plans are turned upside down when she falls in love with Maud. The tale twists as the young women are separated but come to realise the strength of their passion for each other. Before they can be reunited, Sue must escape imprisonment, and Maud must uncover the truth behind the plots and counterplots that surround her... Arthur misses his family and would love for Tom to follow in his footsteps. However working with his father is the last thing on Tom's mind until he retraces his steps to the picturesque home where he grew up. In this, the third series, a new doctor, Dr Donald Newman (Richard Wilson), arrives in Ormston. Donald studied with Arthur at medical college in Edinburgh. He has practised medicine all over the world, however, he is persuaded to settle in the village to keep an eye on the surgery for Arthur.
