Bailey On

Three documentaries commissioned by Lew Grade for ITV between 1968 and 1971, directed by the acclaimed photographer David Bailey, one of the prime architects of the Swinging Sixties. Born in the East End of London in 1938, David Bailey immersed himself in the world of photography following a stint in the R.A.F in the 1950s and has since gone on to be a name synonymous with the 'A' List crowd who he has collaborated with over the years. His subjects have ranged from rock stars and actors to models, politicians and royalty. As well as being an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, he has worked for British, American, French & Italian Vogue, directed fictional movies, won eight awards for his commercials, published over 20 twenty books and staged over two dozen major exhibitions at some of the most prestigious venues worldwide. Yet despite working with many of the movers and shakers he has always retained his edge and remained distinctly outspoken through his ground-breaking work. With his standing among this artistic community Bailey was given unprecedented access to his subjects - photographer Cecil Beaton, Italian film director Luchino Visconti and pop art legend Andy Warhol. The latter documentary was infamously banned by the Appeal Court when a complaint was lodged about its content by then sportcaster and Record Breakers host Ross McWhirter (later to be assassinated by the IRA). Originally due to be broadcast in January 1973 it was pulled from schedule just hours before it was due to be shown when a court injunction was taken out against the production on the grounds that it was offensive and indecent. It took two months, unprecedented media coverage and the triumph of common sense over small-mindedness to finally show the documentary on the TV channel that originally commissioned it.
