Do The Right Thing

Do The Right Thing : short review

Do The Right Thing

Spike Lee's damning views on 80's racism, set on a sweltering New York day. The activities of three young black men range from raising social awareness to delivering pizzas from the focal point of the neighbourhood, Sal's Famous Pizzeria. When the racial activist realises the lack of black celebrities in the pizza house, the buoyant good mood of the crowd turns into a riotous mob. The moral of the film challenges the idealistic view of racial harmony.

Charlie Chaplin - Modern Times/ The Great Dictator/ Gold Rush/ Limelight/ Bonus Documentary

Boxset containing four films and a documentary on Charlie Chaplin. Modern Times - Chaplin's last silent film is a witty satire on the 'little' worker being gobbled up in the coming of the Machine Age. Includes his own music soundtrack featuring the popular song 'Smile'. The Great Dictator - The Little Tramp exits and is replaced by a dual-role Chaplin taking a vicious, satirical sideswipe at the rise of Fascism. A meek Jewish barber is the spitting image of Adenoid Hynkel, the dictator of Tomania, with side-splitting results. Jack Oakie won an Oscar nomination for his show-stealing role as neighbouring dictator Napaloni of Bacteria. The Gold Rush - One of Charlie's favourites in which he seeks his fortune in the Klondike, featuring the charming 'dance of the bread rolls'. Limelight - An ageing music hall entertainer takes a beautiful young ballerina under his wing in this sentimental tale which was Chaplin's last American film before his politics made him an exile. Notable for an hilarious skit sequence between Charlie and Buster Keaton, and its beautiful music score which won an Oscar - 20 years later!
