Whilst axing jobs, Owen tries to woo Alva in an attempt to whisk her off to New Orleans so they can start a new life together. Now Alva must make a choice between the man she loves and the town she grew up in...

Former Union cavalryman, Buck, (Sidney Poiter) has turned guide for the ex-slaves as they plan to move to the West. Phoney Preacher (Harry Belafonte) is intent on obstructing Buck at every turn as it suits the whites plan to keep the freed slaves where they are as a form of cheap labour. This film marks Sidney Poiter's first venture in the director's chair.
