The Marx Brothers story begins over 100 years ago. Chico played the piano in pubs, Groucho sang as a boy soprano, and the brothers appeared as The Four Nightingales and The Six Mascots. The first performance in the Marx Brothers style was Fun in Hi Skule in 1912, followed by Mr. Green's Reception, Home Again,On the Mezzanine Floor and I'll Say She Is which became their first big success in 1924. After Home Again Gummo was to leave show business and became an agent, being replaced in the family performing troupe by Zeppo. The Cocoanuts,a Broadway show which became their first film, was soon to follow. Stage performances gave them the opportunity to test the material in front of an audience allowing them to perfect scripts and timing, a ritual they repeated when filming A Night at the Opera.
