On the morning of 14th October 1066, the army of Anglo-Saxon England stood in a line 800 metres long and up to ten ranks deep on a ridge several kilometres north of Hastings. Underneath its battle banner, the Dragon of Wessex, stood its last king, Harold Godwinson, and his two brothers. Around them stood one of the finest fighting forces in Europe. Below was ranged a foreign army of adventurers and mercenaries from all over western Europe, including 2,000 knights mounted on stallions. Astride a mighty black warhorse rode the commander of the invaders. His name was William, Duke of Normandy. Both men had come to this sloping field to decide the fate of a kingdom.
