British Transport Films Collection, The - Vol. 3 - Running A Railway

After the nationalisation of transport in 1948, the British Transport Commission set up its own in-house film unit under the leadership of Edgar Anstey, one of the pioneers of the British documentary film. Between 1950 and 1980 the unit produced a hundreds of travelogues promoting destinations around the British Isles and offering information and encouraging travel on Britain's railways and other forms of transport. Much of this huge range of material, much of it now held in the National Film and Television Archive. The films provide a crafted visual record of 20th century life in rural and urban Britain.
