After crash landing upon a strange alien world, American astronaut Leo Davidson discovers that the dominant species on the planet are Simians, the apes and monkeys have formed a savage yet intelligent civilisation. Humans are considered at best slaves, at worst, nuisances to be destroyed. Davidson manages to form an alliance with the nomadic beauty Daena, her tribal father Karubi and Ari, a chimpanzee who fights for human rights. As the brutal General Thade closes in on Davidson and his companions he realises he must make his way across the barren landscape known as 'the forbidden zone' to discover the ancient and terrible secret that was responsible in the birth of the planet of the apes.
