Phil (Will Ferrell) and his father, Buck (Robert Duvall), have had a difficult relationship, with Buck constantly competing with his son and upstaging him at every turn. From this experience, Phil determines to raise his own son, Sam, differently. He signs up to the position of assistant coach to Sam's soccer team, the Tigers. However, when the head coach leaves, Phil is goaded by Buck into heading the team. Buck himself, just happens to coach the pre-eminent team of the league, the Gladiators. Old scores come into play as Phil keeps raising the stakes in his all-out attempt to win the league championship. Can father and son put their rocky past behind them and do what's best for their own children (and grandchild!) and realise that soccer is just a game? Not a chance!
