Since humans first walked the earth, mountains were seen as places of mystery, wonder and fear, where unseen spirits often spoke in thunderous fury without warning. The avalanche is still one of the most frightening and destructive forces in nature, with over one million avalanches rumbling down the world's mountains every year. In parts of Europe whole communities live under constant threat and band together for their very survival. For those lured to the mountain extremes, tragedy often strikes.

Spider

During the 1960s in the East End of London, a young boy sees his father brutally murder his mother and replace her with a prostitute, Yvonne. Convinced that they plan to murder him next, Spider decides upon a plan which he hopes will save him. Diagnosed as a schizophrenic, Spider is committed to an institution. Now, in his thirties, he has been released to a halfway house. Unsupervised, he stops taking his medication and starts to revisit his childhood haunts and his memories begin to return...

The RAF struggled to find a way to take the war to Germany after the Luftwaffe's attack on Britain tailed off in 1941. It eventually determined on The Strategic Bombing Campaign designed to disrupt German war prodouction and undermine civilian morale. This programme, from the television series Battlefield features fascinating archive footage from all over the world and includes a review of the political and military situation before the battle. Also features portraits of the leaders and commanders, an explanation of weapons and tactics and the story of the battle itself.
