Bette Davis first major screen role as the cockney waitress Mildred, is electric in this adaptation of Somerset Maugham's tragic tale. He meets Mildred who manipulates his affection cruelly, breaking a date to go out with a loutish salesman. But when she is deserted by the salesman and discovers she is pregnant, Carey offers to marry her, but once again she leaves him for one of his fellow students...
