3 Classic Hope & Crosby Features Of The Silver Screen : short review
Three features. My Favorite Brunette - Legendary funnyman Bob Hope plays a baby photographer who gets mixed up with gangsters in this bubbly slapstick comedy-drama. Ronnie Jackson (Hope) wants nothing more than to step into the gumshoes of office mate Sam McCloud (film noir veteran Alan Ladd), a private investigator who runs his own detective agency. Jackson gets his big break when a mysterious femme fatale (Dorothy Lamour) strolls into his office and, mistaking him for McCloud, asks for help with her uncle's kidnapping. Jackson plays along with the detective role but is soon in way over his head as he becomes embroiled in a dangerous (and comic!) mystery. Road To Bali - Having to leave Melbourne in a hurry to avoid various marriage proposals, two song-and-dance men (Hope & Crosby) sign on for work as divers. This takes them to an idyllic island on the way to Bali where they vie with each other for the favours of Princess Lala (Dorothy Lamour). The hazardous dive produces a chest of priceless jewels which arouses the less romantic interest of some shady locals. Road To Hollywood - This documentary feature charts the singer-actor's rise to stardom during his early years in show business. Crosby's years with Paul Whiteman and the Rhythm Boys, his performances at the Coconut Grove and his first steps into radio and recording are covered. Included are clips from some of Crosby's earliest film appearances: Reaching for the Moon (1930), Check and Double Check (1930), Hollywood on Parade (1932) and the rare Paramount short Please (1933).
Set during the bitterly-fought Burma Campaign of World War Two, Gregory Peck stars as Squadron Leader Forrester, a pilot whose life has already been shattered by the loss of his wife during an air raid on London. Shot down after a dogfight with a Japanese fighter, Forrester finds himself marooned in the hellish Burmese jungle. His navigator is badly injured and his passenger traumatised. Together, the three battle to stay alive and to make it out of the jungle to safety. Along the way, a chance encounter with a beautiful Burmese girl, Anna, and her friend, Miss Menab, a missionary, changes everything. Adapted by Eric Ambler from the novel by H.E. Bates, it was filmed on location in the jungles of Ceylon for added realism and also boasts a distinguished supporting cast.
