20:30:40 : short review
Romantic drama about the universal complexity of modern relationships. The story follows three women aged 20 (Lee) 30 (Liu) and 40 (Chang) at different stages of life and love. Set in Taipei, Taiwan against the background of minor earthquakes that the city is experiencing, the women's love lives are as unpredictable and turbulent as the tremors they endure. Xiao Jie (Lee), innocent and impressionable, escapes her overbearing parents for the first time to leave home and follow her dream of a pop music career. Arriving in the city, she befriends a girl her own age, Yi Tong, and under the 'care' of a jaded rock manager, tries to fulfill her ambition. As she experiences the hardships of independence for the first time, her awakening emotions take her into new and risky personal territory. Flight attendant Xiang Xiang (Liu), in her thirties and slightly jaded about love, is caught between a turbulent affair with a married man and a persistent younger lover who she doesn't take seriously. She lives life with a heady mixture of conflict and passion, unaware that a deeper and more fulfilling experience is closer than she thinks. Lily Zhao (Chang) a forty year-old divorcee bravely faces a new life as a single woman while still emotionally supporting all those around her - including her ex-husband. Lily, who looks much younger than her forty years, energetically throw herself into the dating scene with often embarrassing and mostly hilarious results until she meets the suave and eligible Jerry who is inconveniently dating a girl her own daughter's age. Each of the three women come to a realization about themselves through the drama of their relationships and find that their vision of the future is not what they thought it would be...
